No shocks on opening day of competition

A large and enthusiastic crowd enjoyed a long opening day of action in the Commonwealth Games Sevens competition at Glasgow's Ibrox Park, even though there were not many close contests and quite a few very one-sided matches.

Scotland soaked up a football-crowd atmosphere as they stormed their way past Canada 21-5 and into quarter-finals. The hosts had to beat the North Americans in their final Pool A game after going down 17-14 in a controversial opener with New Zealand. They now face a tough test against South Africa in Sunday's quarter-final, with a semi-final clash against England or Samoa the reward for the winner.

New Zealand, as expected, easily won Group A, not conceding a point in their other two games against Canada (39-0) and Barbados (59-0) and will now face Kenya in the last eight. It was a trying day for Barbados, who only competed because of the withdrawal of Nigeria, as they shipped 183 points.

Australia and England were not tested other than when they met each other in the final Group D match, Australia coming from behind to win 15-7. Australia's reward is a quarter-final against Wales, while England take on Samoa. The upset of the group came when Uganda beat Sri Lanka 17-14.

Group C was another where the top two were not tested until they met in the final game, and it was Samoa who emerged victorious over Wales 19-12.

On a day of few shocks, South Africa and Kenya easily progressed from Group B, South Africa winning the showdown 20-0.
