Exeter Chiefs and London Irish win
August 23, 2014
Exeter Chiefs continued their unbeaten pre-season with a 22-21 win at Ulster on Friday.
The Chiefs were trailing 21-8 going into the final 10 minutes of the match but quick-fire tries from Matt Jess and Henry Slade saw them win at the Kingspan Stadium by the narrowest of margins. Ulster had their chances to close out the game and scored three tries of their own with Rory Scholes grabbing a brace alongside one from debutant Louis Ludik while Jess grabbed another try in the first-half.
Elsewhere, London Irish saw off Bristol 27-26 at Hazelwood. To the joy of Brian Smith, prop Halani Aulika grabbed two tries for London Irish, after he missed much of last season through injury, with Scott Steele also scoring alongside 12 points from the boot of Tom Homer. For Bristol they would have taken heart from their performance with Andy Short (two), Mitch Eadie and Ross Johnston scoring.
Saracens comfortably dispatched the Ospreys 39-5 in their pre-season friendly in the heart of the City of London.
David Strettle and Billy Vunipola ensured Sarries got off to a flying start with first-half tries, while eight more points from the boot of Charlie Hodgson sent the home side into the half-time break 18-0 to the good.
The Ospreys hit back with the first score of the second half via back rower Tyler Ardron, but Saracens rallied to power past the visiting region with three unanswered tries. Richard Wigglesworth, Ben Spencer and Rhys Gill touched down to cap an impressive Saracens team performance.
