Former All Blacks hooker Andrew Hore has answered the call to come out of retirement and provide injury cover for Southland in the ITM Cup.

Without veteran hooker Jason Rutledge the Stags have been left a little thin at rake, prompting coach Jamie Mackintosh put a call in to his friend Hore to help out in Invercargill.

The Stags have confirmed Hore is now training with their squad, but will only see potential game time if one of their two remaining hookers is injured.

Hore, who previously played the NPC with Taranaki and Otago, retired from top rugby in 2013 having played 83 tests for the All Blacks. He did make appearances for the British Barbarians and a World XV in 2014 against international sides.

The Stags have begun this year's NPC in promising fashion with victories against Bay of Plenty and North Harbour and host neighbours Otago on Saturday.
