South African lock De Kock Steenkamp has joined Ospreys from Stormers after the region received Welsh Rugby Union permission to sign him as a Wales convert.

As a result, the 27-year-old could play for Wales after a three-year residency period. Each region is permitted to sign up to eight foreign players, but two must be "time-serving" for the Welsh national team. Ospreys required special dispensation for the move as under new regulations, imports can only become eligible as time servers if they are under the age of 27 in the pack or 25 in the backs.

Steenkamp, who is known as a line out specialist, has 49 Super Rugby appearances for Stormers since making his debut in 2010, as well as 59 Currie Cup outings for Western Province.

"The Ospreys are a team with a short but proud history having won the Pro12 four times and talking to the coaches there is an exciting transition going on at the moment that will see them come through the next few seasons stronger than ever," said Steenkamp.

"I want to be a part of that. Looking around the place and talking to people there really made me excited about signing. Hopefully I'll be able to link up with the squad soon and play a part in helping to make sure the Ospreys remain the best side in Wales as well as one of the best in Europe."

Steenkamp is the Ospreys' ninth signing of the summer. The region started the season in style with a 44-13 victory over Treviso at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.
