New South Wales Waratahs coach Michael Cheika has reportedly signed a three-year deal to coach the Wallabies after revealing he had been offered the job on Monday. Cheika is unlikely to be unveiled until Wednesday (AEDT) at the earliest and will reportedly ask Michael Foley to join his team as assistant coaches. Brumbies mentor Stephen Larkham rejected an assistant coach role on Tuesday.

Ewen McKenzie stepped down as Wallabies boss in the wake of their loss to New Zealand on Saturday in a move which capped a dreadful fortnight for Australian rugby. With Australia departing for their end-of-season tour on Friday, Australian Rugby Union CEO Bill Pulver has to act quickly and it appears the Cheika appointment is now a formality.

"It's a pretty humbling experience to be asked to be involved in something like that, but we'll see what happens," Cheika told the Sydney Morning Herald. "There are a few things to be ironed out, obviously the logistics, etc ... everything is so close. So we will see how it goes and work it out from there."

He added "who wouldn't be excited" in coaching the Wallabies but there are still details to be sorted with his franchise the Waratahs. Cheika, who led the 'Tahs to the 2014 Super Rugby title, still has a year left on his deal and so compensation will have to be sorted.

An ARU spokesman has since said it is ''still in the process of investigating options to replace Ewen McKenzie. At this stage, no prospective coaches have been confirmed in the role - but we hope to have a solution in place and announced before the team leaves for the Spring Tour on Friday."
