May delighted to get 'demon off back' with try

England's Jonny May spoke of his relief at scoring his first international try in the wake of their 24-21 defeat to New Zealand.

Despite eventually falling to their fifth successive loss to the All Blacks, England started the game the better of the two sides with May scoring an impressive solo effort after just three minutes. Collecting the ball in his own half, May danced around Conrad Smith before sprinting past Ben Smith and then dodging past Israel Dagg to go over.

"I'll have to watch it back. I saw bits of it. It's funny because when you're playing you can see it on the big screen and you think, 'ah, that was me'," May said. "I remember just getting the ball, going as fast as I can and then the next thing I'm dotting down.

"It's in an instant when you're moving at that speed. I can't remember thinking much, it's just a case of going for it and scoring. I'm just glad I didn't drop the ball over the line like I did against Ireland when I had it knocked out of my hand."

It was May's first try in his eighth Test for England and he hopes to build on his score ahead of the Springboks next weekend.

"As a winger you want to score tries and the pressure does build on you," May said. "I'm so happy to have done that. I feel as though that has been coming for a while now. It's almost a demon off the back to get that first try. I knew I could do it and the coaches knew I could as well. I'm glad they've shown patience in me and that I've been able to pay them back. Hopefully it's the first of many tries and I can keep forward from here."
