Matthews foul play case dismissed

Harlequins lock Charlie Matthews is free to play Newcastle this weekend after the citing complaint against him was dismissed.

Matthews was cited for allegedly making contact with the eye area of Dominic Ryan in the last throws of Saturday's match between Harlequins and Leinster in Dublin. Had Matthews been found guilty, he could have faced anything up to a one-year ban.

But after hearing the case pleading Matthews' innocence, the judicial officer, Rod McKenzie, dismissed any notion of foul play. The statement from European Professional Club Rugby said: "Following a review which also included evidence from Dominic Ryan in which he stated that he had not felt any contact with his eye area, the Judicial Officer was not satisfied that Matthews had committed an act of foul play and dismissed the citing complaint.
