Former All Black Mike Delany will move to Newcastle Falcons from Clermont Auvergne next season, the Aviva Premiership club have announced.

The fly-half, who was a relative latecomer to rugby and made his debut in 2005, will be 33 when he arrives at Kingston Park.

Delany has one cap for New Zealand, against Italy in 2009, and has played Super Rugby for the Chiefs and Highlanders.

Newcastle Falcons director of rugby Dean Richards said: "We're really pleased to have recruited a quality player like Mike. We have had a very good look at him and his style of play and ability to control a game will fit very well with what we are doing as a club.

"He is pretty low mileage and in good shape and brings some valuable experience from the French Top 14, Super Rugby and of course being involved with the All Black set up on the 2009 Autumn tour."

Delany said: "I'm excited to be given the opportunity to play for Newcastle Falcons in such a competitive competition as the Premiership.

"I'm looking forward to bringing my experience playing in New Zealand, Japan and France to Newcastle and to working with the coaches and great young talent in a team that is on the rise.

"My family and I are looking forward to getting settled into life in Newcastle, exploring the region and working on our Geordie lingo!"
