Fly-half Brock James has been ruled out of the start of the Top 14 season due to a heart anomaly, his club Clermont Auvergne have announced.

James played 22 games for the yellow army last season, scoring 173 points, but did not start the Top 14 final, which Clermont lost to Stade Francais.

"The treatment requires a minor surgical procedure which will take place in the next couple of days," Clermont explained.

"He'll be able to resume non-contact training shortly afterwards."

Clermont are well stocked in the playmaker position, with France international Camille Lopez likely to wear the No.10 shirt as the new season kicks off.
