Argentina's Mariano Galarza sees ban appeal refused

Argentina lock Mariano Galarza has seen his appeal against his nine-week suspension rejected and will subsequently miss the rest of the World Cup.

Galarza was citied after Argentina's opening World Cup defeat by New Zealand for making "contact with the eye or eye area" of Brodie Retallick during the Wembley clash. He pleaded not guilty at his hearing but judicial officer Christopher Quinlan deemed the actions serious enough to find him guilty of an act of foul play.

The Pumas player appealed against Quinlin's decision but it was announced on Sunday the Gloucester star had not been successful in his attempts to overturn the ban.

An appeal committee led by Professor Lorne Crerar determined Quinlan had been right to find Galarza guilty of an act of foul play. The committee also deemed the initial 12-week sanction - reduced to nine weeks due to Galarza's previously good disciplinary record - was "in accordance with World Rugby's prescribed sanctioning regime."

The decision means Galarza will play no further part in the World Cup and will not be allowed to return to action until November 26. Argentina secured their first World Cup win against Georgia in Gloucester on Friday.
