Warren Whitely will captain the Lions for a third consecutive Super Rugby season after the side confirmed his role on Friday.

With 52 caps for the Lions, the experienced No.8 said he welcomed the continued responsibility of leading his team.

"It is a big honour to again lead the Lions in the Super Rugby competition," Whiteley said. "I take the task very seriously while I also enjoy making decisions on and off the field.

"While I think nothing has changed it becomes easier. Also because we've got such a great core of leaders around me."

Coach Johan Ackermann said Whiteley was the clear choice for the leadership role as it builds continuity to have the same captain as the last two years.
