Ireland centre Robbie Henshaw is to leave PRO12 outfit Connacht at the end of the season, the province have confirmed.

The 22-year-old, who has become a key man in Joe Schmidt's Ireland set-up, has opted not to renew his contract at the province beyond the end of the current season.

Henshaw said: "I would like to thank everyone involved in Connacht Rugby who has played a part in getting me to where I am today, from my club, Buccaneers, to my school, Marist College and all of the coaching staff in Connacht Rugby itself."

There is speculation Henshaw could be heading to Connacht's Irish rivals Leinster, who will be looking for reinforcements after the impending departures of Ian Madigan and Ben Te'o.

Connacht coach Pat Lam added: "Obviously we are disappointed with the ultimate outcome of our negotiations with Robbie, however, we respect the decision he has made and wish him all the best with the Irish team into the future."
