'Boks backs forward their case
September 18, 1999

What was effectively a Springbok second XV trounced South Western Districts Eagles in George on Saturday, scoring ten tries to one in a 60-10 win.
The 'Boks opened with all 15 players who did not begin last weekend's win over Eastern Province, which meant starts for a number of players with more than mere hope of getting into the opening game of the World Cup in a fortnight.
In fact the Districts side opened with a penalty as it took the 'Boks a while to settle. But Breyton Paulse finally set up the opening try with a 40 metre break which he finished off himself
And in dry conditions the world cup squad's backs who eventually imposed their pace and power, with Stefan Terblanche running in three tries, and Paulse - who featured in much that was good - landing two. Two more tries came from Wayne Julies, impressive on his debut in the centre, Other try scorers were Jannie de Beer, Chris Rossouw and Brendan Venter. De Beer landed five conversions.
Paulse, Rossouw and Venter all made strong contributions to push for a place in the starting XV against Scotland on October 3.
More importantly for Springboks' supporters, Bobby Skinstad, after only two full games this season, and unable to train for much of the week, gave his dodgy knee a 30 minute riun out; but in half an hour, and looking ring-rusty, he gave no clue as to whether he will be match-fit in time.
Barney Vorster crossed for the Eagles only try.
