Fiji look to upset French
September 27, 1999
The Fijians have arrived in France ahead of their first game in Pool C on Friday and are confident of causing a major upset.
Grouped with Canada, Namibia and France the South Sea Islanders are targeting their clash with the French at Toulouse on 16th October as a possible upset.
Team manager Pita Naculva said "We don't fear anybody, least of all the favourites of this World Cup." While captain Greg Smith (pictured) was equally upbeat "France were beaten by the Tongans. OK, it was there, but why should we not think we can do the same?"
"Don't expect us to drop balls close to the opposition line like we did in the previous World Cup. We have worked hard and we have improved. Up front, we're better organised and stronger."
Canada have already identified Fiji as the team to beat in the group, which unless the French regain some spark could be the most closely fought, with the possibility that three sides could go through to the knock out stages
