Guscott out, but Greenwood's inclusion no surprise
September 28, 1999

England coach Clive Woodward tonight sprung an immediate World Cup surprise by leaving out Jeremy Guscott for Saturday's opening match against Italy at Twickenham.
However the inclusion of Will Greenwood will come as no surprise to scrum.com readers.
In our preview of the England game against the Premiership all stars earlier this month Scrum's Iain Morrison wrote " However of all England's centres, Will Greenwood is the indispensable one rather than the Bath man. Greenwood's ability to offload mid-tackle offers the priceless opportunity to break the gain-line. I suspect he will line up with both Guscott and De Glanville in the group stages."
Guscott's absence will be a major talking point as England look to get their World Cup campaign off to a flying start. But former England skipper de Glanville has been in prime form recently and now has an excellent opportunity to try and retain his place against New Zealand on Saturday week.
Richard Cockerill has seen off rival Phil Greening for the hooker's berth,
while Saracens lock Danny Grewcock starts as Martin Johnson's second-row partner above the more experienced Tim Rodber.
Woodward continues with his recent selection policy of including an entire
front row among his substitutes, Greening joining Leicester props Graham Rowntree and Darren Garforth as cover.
There are nine survivors from the England side that struggled to beat Italy in a World Cup qualifying match at Huddersfield last November.

Full England line-up:
15 Perry (Bath), 14 Luger (Saracens), 13 Greenwood (Leicester), 12 De Glanville (Bath), 11 Healy (Leicester), 10 Wilkinson (Newcastle), 9 Dawson (Northampton), 1 Leonard (Harlequins), 2 Cockerill (Leicester), 3 Vickery (Gloucester), 4 Johnson (Leicester, captain), 5 Grewcock (Saracens), 6 Hill (Saracens), 7 Back (Leicester), 8 Dallaglio (Wasps).

Replacements: Beal (Northampton), Guscott (Bath) or Catt (Bath), Grayson (Northampton), Corry (Leicester), Rowntree (Leicester), Garforth (Leicester), Greening (Sale).
