John Hart has moved Christian Cullen to the centre for Sunday's opening game against Tonga - allowing Jonah Lomu to return to the starting line up.
"We've seen a real turnaround in Jonah in the last few weeks," said Hart. "He's as fit as I've ever seen him and the time is right for him to start."
New Zealand have made one other change from the side beaten by Australia in the Bledisloe Cup match in Sydney last month with Reuben Thorne replacing Dylan Mika at blind side flanker.
Open side Josh Kronfeld is included despite still being troubled by a groin injury, he picked up in training on Tuesday. However the team management are confident that his standby Andrew Blowers will not be needed. "Josh is 100 percent - he trained freely today and he'll be fine for
Sunday," said Hart
New Zealand team: Jeff Wilson; Tana Umaga, Christian Cullen, Alama Ieremia, Jonah Lomu; Andrew Mehrtens, Justin Marshall; Taine Randall (capt), Josh Kronfeld, Reuben Thorne, Robin Brooke, Norm Maxwell, Kees Meeuws, Anton Oliver, Carl Hoeft.
Replacements: To be named.
