Wales prop Paul James faces a spell on the sidelines after undergoing eye surgery.

The Ospreys forward, who has won 66 caps and made one appearance as a substitute during this season's RBS 6 Nations Championship, was referred to an eye specialist after a problem was picked up last weekend.

James, 33, captained the Ospreys in their Guinness PRO12 clash against the Scarlets last Saturday.

"As part of Paul's routine post-match medical check on Saturday, the doctor identified an eye problem and referred him to a specialist for consultation," Ospreys medical performance manager Chris Towers said.

"His advice was that surgery was required to prevent the issue worsening.

"Paul had an operation on Thursday. We will continue to consult with the specialist, and are still awaiting further details of his after-care."

Although the Ospreys have put no date on when James might return to action, he could now be a doubt for Wales' June tour to New Zealand, which features Test matches against the world champion All Blacks in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin.
