Wellington reach NPC semis

In the final match ever to be played at Wellington's famous Athletic Park (a new stadium has been built in the city) the home side secured third place, with a 36 -16b win over Otago, and a semi final away to Waikato next weekend.
As ever, the strong wind played an important part in the way this game unfolded. Playing with the wind Otago built up a 13-0 half time lead, through 2 Lane penalties and a Willis try , converted by Laney, but this never seemed likely to be enough.

So it proved. Wellington scored tries at regular intervals through out the second peroid, Fleming getting 2 and O'Halloran, Holwell, Afeaki and Tiatia one each. Holwell converted 3 and Otago's only consolation was a Carringto penalty.

Wellington have never appeared in a semi final and Graham Mourie has done a superb job in coaching the side .In their season opener they were well and truly walloped by Auckland and their prospects looked grim. In recent weeks they have started to prosper and an enthralling battle with Waikato looms. Otago have lost their title, and will be disappointed, but nobody will be really surprised that they could not overcome the loss of so many players on All Black World Cup duty.
