Sharks and Springboks flanker Marcell Coetzee has been ruled out for nine months with the knee injury he picked up in Saturday's defeat to the Lions.

Springboks flanker Coetzee, who has signed for Ulster ahead of next season, limped off in the 31st minute of the match and scans have revealed the injury requires surgery.

The Sharks have announced Coetzee now faces an extended spell on the sidelines and he will undergo an operation this week.

The prognosis looked grim post-match with Sharks boss Gary Gold admitting: "It's not looking good. He's gone to hospital, he's had a scan ... it's not looking great."
