Hawks look for Watsonians favour
October 22, 1999

Watsonians blew the BT Premiership Division One championship race wide open last week by edging out leaders Glasgow Hawks by a single point.
Ironically, the Myreside men could do Hawks a favour tomorrow when they visit on-song Heriot's who finally look set to mount a serious title defence.

However, despite running in an impressive haul of 123 points in their last two outings, the champions are taking nothing for granted against their city rivals.

Flanker Andrew Dall stressed: "They have some very good players who have started to put it together. If we treat them lightly they'll cash in." Heriot's should have hooker John Taylor back in the scrum, while stand-off Ross Haddow could retain the number 10 jersey for the visitors.

Meanwhile Hawks have been ordered to cut out the mistakes for the table-topping clash against the dangermen from Gala. Coach Bill McDonald reckons a repeat of last week's sloppy show in the defeat by Watsonians could ruin their title hopes. McDonald said: "We made far too many mistakes and paid the penalty. The errors have to go if we're to stay top.''

Hawks' title hopes suffered a double blow at Myreside with a leg injury to scrum-half Cammy Little who will miss the next three weeks. Rookie Kenny Sinclair will be thrown into the fray for his first start since his summer switch from Kilmarnock.

Gala's own title aspirations were dented by last week's defeat by Currie but the Netherdale side have front row ace Gary Isaac back for the New Anniesland showdown.

Melrose player-coach Gary Parker reckons that last week's bonus point at West of Scotland could help kick start his side's season. "We've never played above 60% but the signs are that we're beginning to put it together."

Parker's troops should dispose of struggling Kelso at the Greenyards. Basement boys West face an uphill struggle at Hawick, while Currie are going for a Borders' double on their trip to Jed-Forest.
