Fox a future All Black coach?
October 26, 1999

Speaking on a New Zealand TV about the success of Auckland in this year's NPC former All Black scrum half Chris Laidlaw has predicted that assistant coach and former All Black fly half Grant Fox will be All Black coach within 4 years.
Laidlaw attributed the development of the Auckland back play directly to the influence of Fox. Citing the emergence of exciting new fly half Orene Ai'i. Fox is attributed with instilling on-field discipline to Ai'i's natural talent.

Laidlaw's comments are particularly interesting as this year's NPC also saw the emergence of exciting coaching potential in the shape of ex All Black captains Graham Mourie and Buck Shelford, at Wellington and North Harbour respectively.

Mourie will have a golden opportunity to further advance his claims when coaching the Wellington Hurricanes in Super 12 2000. In short, the coaching talent available to the All Blacks in the foreseeable future is formidable, a further example of how the New Zealand system efficiently develops the right people.
