Andrew Mehrtens is to be given until the last minute to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday's semi final with France.
The influential fly half hobbled out of last Sunday's quarter-final at Murrayfield at half time and has undergone a scan to establish the extent of the damage to his left knee.
Although the All Black side is to be named on Thursday evening, John Hart will reserve the right to make a late change should Mehrtens fail to recover.
The Canterbury player underwent a scan on Tuesday to establish the seriousness of an injury and was relieved to discover that there was no structural damage.
"There is a sense of relief in the camp, but he is a long way yet from playing on Sunday," said Hart. "We won't take any risks. He'll only play if he's right."
Mehrtens is unlikely to train again until Friday after the scan revealed bruising and fluid on the knee, but no cartilage or ligament damage.
