South Africa are determined to send fly-half Henry Honiball out of international rugby as a winner, Springbok captain Joost van der Westhuizen said Wednesday.
South Africa face New Zealand in the World Cup third-place playoff at the Millennium Stadium on Thursday night - a repeat of the 1995 final with rather less at stake four years on.
"We'll be playing this one for Henry," van der Westhuizen said.
"It's sad to lose a player of his calibre, but he's made his decision and life will go on."
Jannie de Beer, who played in all five of the Springboks' games at the tournament, has voluntarily stepped down as fly-half for the match to give Honiball the opportunity of a test finale.
"We want to thank him for everything he's done for South African rugby," de Beer said.
Honiball, 34, will play for English club Bristol after the tournament and the Springboks selectors do not pick overseas-based players.
He has been troubled by a hamstring injury throught the tournament but will win his 35th test cap on Thursday night.
Honiball has played three tests at fly-half against New Zealand and has yet to be on the losing end. He has amassed 143 points for South Africa, scoring one try and kicking 36 conversions and 22 penalties. He has scored more than 1,000 points in first-class rugby.
