Fox rules himself out of All Blacks position

Auckland NPC assistant coach and ex-All Black fly half Grant Fox has ruled himself out of consideration for the vacant All Blacks coaching job.
After a very successful NPC season in which Auckland again became champions, the rumour mill was beginning to promote Fox's chances of succeeding John Hart.Fox has acknowledged that he has only just started out on his coaching career and needs to serve some sort of apprenticeship before offering himself for the demanding top job,

"There is no point in getting ahead of yourself. If you are looking at coaching as a long -term career , and are successful in getting to the top too quickly, what do you do four or five years down the track ?"

However, Fox has indicated that he would consider , if asked, lending his support to the next All Black coach as a technical advisor, the role currently played by Canterbury Crusaders' coach Wayne Smith.


However, Otago Highlanders' coach Tony Gilbert has revealed that he is seriously considering applying for the All Blacks' coaching position vacated by John Hart.

It appears that the Highlanders' management team has a plan in place if Gilbert were to get the job. Chief Executive of the Otago Highlanders, John Hornbrook, endorsed Gilbert's candidacy.

"Tony Gilbert, to my mind, would be the best person in New Zealand to take the All Blacks. We love having him here but if he wants to go further we will give him our full backing."
