November 9, 1999
Ex All Black winger John Kirwan, until Jeff Wilson overtook him in the World Cup, New Zealand's leading try scorer in tests, has been confirmed as the Auckland Blues manager for Super 12 2000. Kirwan, who is 34, has spent the past 3 years playing for Japanese team NEC. He played in the Super 10 before retiring from rugby union in 1994 after more than a decade with Auckland and the All Blacks.
JK, as he is popularly known, has expressed himself delighted to be working with new Auckland Blues coach Gordon Hunter, "He is a fantastic bloke and a top coach, and I believe he is the sort of man players really want to play for."
