Matt Dawson has failed to regain full fitness ahead of Northampton's opening European Cup game against Neath on Saturday.
The Saints will been forced to give a debut to debut to teenage scrum-half Ian Vass as the clubs other two senior scrum halves are also injured
"I have no reservations about putting Ian into the team," said director of rugby John Steele, speaking about the eighteen year old Vass. "He is a hugely talented player."
Vass, a multi-talented sportsman who had England hockey trials and attended the Aston Villa school of excellence, has progressed through the schools system in Northampton and Saints' junior teams.
Although back in training following a hamstring injury, Dawson is still at least a week away from being able to return.
Fly-half Paul Grayson was forced into an emergency scrum-half role during Northampton's 24-19 win over London Irish last Saturday after they lost both Dom Malone and his replacement James Bramhall through injury.
