Fijian fury at Sevens seeding
November 22, 1999

The announcement by the IRB of the seedings for the first round of the World Rugby Sevens Series has left World Chmpions Fiji in shock.

The Fijians, seeded second, have dominated sevens rugby in recent years and won the World Cup in 1997. They have taken this latest news as the impetus to see off the challenge of the number one seeds New Zealand.

Fiji team manager Jone Buakula said, "I am quite surprised that we are ranked second but we don't really look too much into that. It was the same case last year but we still managed to win the event, and we will be going all out to do it again."

The reason for the All Blacks top seeding can be traced to the strength of the squad they are taking to Dubai but with names such as Vunibaka and Kiliraki expected to appear for Fiji they may have what it will take to retain the trophy.

The seeding means the two sides will avoid each other until the final, if they both progress that far, to set up a repeat of the last two finals in Dubai.
