Hurricanes go for Yates
December 3, 1999

Former Bath and England prop Kevin Yates (pictured) is one of only five non New Zealand qualified players to get a Super 12 contract for next year.
The Wellington Hurricanes have signed up Yates, who was banned for six months in 1998 after being accused of biting the ear of London Scottish player Simon Fenn, after an impressive NPC campaign for Wellington.
The 27-year-old was capped in Argentina in 1997 and looked to have a bright future in the game in England before his ban.
Yates is full of praise for Hurricanes coach graham Mourie who has given him the chance to return to top-flight rugby. "The Super 12 tournament is the premier provincial rugby competition in the world, and competing against the other New Zealand, South African and Australian sides will be a real test of my ability."
Mourie has no doubt that Yates can make an impact at Super 12 level.
"Kevin had an outstanding season for Wellington in the NPC, and was a logical choice for selection in the Hurricanes squad," he said.
