Second division opposed to a British league
December 10, 1999
English Second Division clubs have reaffirmed their opposition to the formation of a British League.
The English Second Division Rugby (ESDR) board have called for the retention of the Allied Dunbar Premiership, along with relegation and promotion.
In a statement the board said: "Any denial of this right (of promotion)would immediately stifle investment throughout all levels of the game. The development of English-qualified players will be seriously inhibited."
ESDR are calling for "clear and decisive leadership" from the Rugby Football Union in the wake of unanimous support from their First Division counterparts for a 16-strong British League comprising 10 English, four Welsh and two Scottish clubs.
