Lomu and Cullen confirmed for sevens
Wellington

As anticipated by Scrum 2 weeks ago, the NZRFU has confirmed that it has released both Jonah Lomu and Christian Cullen from Super 12 2000 preparations with the Wellington Hurricanes so that they can represent New Zealand in the Wellington round of the World Sevens Series at the beginning of February, Writes Huw Turner.

The announcement comes with New Zealand and Fiji sharing leadership of the Series after 2 rounds and with New Zealand coach Gordon Tietjens facing the prospect of having to rebuild his squad in advance of the Uruguay round at the beginning of January.6 of his 12 man squad have secured Super 12 contracts and although the inclusion of Lomu and Cullen will strengthen his hand for Wellington it does not do very much for his longer term planning.

The appearance of the 2 All Black stars is more of a marketing ploy, designed to add lustre to an event which will see rugby played in the new Westpac Stadium for the first time. One of the criticisms made of the Sevens series so far has been the absence of real playing stars.
