New Zealand exodus to Europe continues
December 15, 1999

The latest New Zealander to join the exodus to Europe appears to be Counties-Manukau hooker/prop John Akurangi.

Disappointed to have missed out on a Super 12 contract when squads were announced two weeks ago, Akurangi is understood to have received offers from England, France and Japan.

But the Leicester Tigers are believed to be favourites to sign the abrasive Akurangi.

"I'll have a clearer idea of things by the end of the week, but at the moment I've just had discussions with people," Akurangi said.

Counties coach Mac McCallion, who was the Auckland Blues assistant to both Graham Henry and Jed Rowlands, believes Akurangi has been poorly treated by Waikato Chiefs' coach Ross Cooper.

Not only did the Chiefs' fail to sign Akurangi but they also failed to give him an explanation for his non-selection.
