Rennie named as Wellington coach
Wellington
December 16, 1999

Dave Rennie, assistant to Graham Mourie at Wellington for the 1999 NPC campaign, has been appointed coach for the 2000 season.

In a move which satisfies NZRFU regulations preventing Super 12 coaches coaching NPC sides, Mourie will assist Rennie as 'technical adviser'.

Cynics in New Zealand view the move as a procedural ploy by which Wellington will effectively retain the services of Mourie as coach without breaking any of the rules.

In the 1999 season Otago worked in similar circumstances, previous coach Tony Gilbert very visibly assisting his successor Kevin Gloag.

Also, there are reports circulating in New Zealand that in the event of Wayne Smith becoming the new All Black coach Canterbury NPC coach Robbie Deans would take his place at the Crusaders and that in the event of Tony Gilbert being appointed Buck Shelford would move south to take charge of the Highlanders.
