Tait to discuss Reivers future
January 8, 2000
Alan Tait will sit down with Edinburgh Reivers officials next week to discuss his future.
The veteran Scotland and British Lions star has been plagued by a back injury since the recent World Cup and yesterday underwent a series of tests to try to isolate the problem.
Although the results of his examinations are not due to be received until the beginning of next week, Tait has already been ruled out of Edinburgh Reivers' vital Heineken Cup trip to Grenoble next Saturday.
There are fears that Tait will have to quit the game after an illustrious career which has seen him hit the heights in both league and union.
However, Reivers coach Ian Rankin refused to be drawn on Tait's future, other than confirming that talks are planned before his side head to the French Alps.
"Alan has seen a specialist and we are expecting the report to be received at the beginning of next week," he said.
"We have to be very careful about what we do with him and at the moment he is not being considered for any games.
"Once the report is received, we can sit down and decide what we are going to do and how we are going to manage the injury.
"But we need the report back before we can take the next step."
Meanwhile, Rankin also explained why he refused a request from Neath to further delay last night's tie at Myreside.
The kick-off was put back by 45 minutes after the Welsh side encountered
However, having touched down in the Scottish capital just one hour before the scheduled start, Neath officials contacted Rankin to ask for the game to be put back even further to allow them time to stop off at their hotel on the way to the ground.
Rankin refused and the Reivers benefited by recording a 23-20 victory to keep alive their hopes of qualification for the knock-out stages.
"They knew what time they had to be here and it was their decision to travel on the day of the game," he said.
"We spoke to the referee about the rules and I am damned if I was going to be sympathetic with them."
