Romanian players go missing in Ireland

Two Steaua Bucharest rugby union players walked out on the squad after the team lost a European Shield match in Galway against Irish club Connacht over the weekend, a Romanian Rugby Union Federation (FRR) said.

FRR president Sorin Fuicu said: "Young players Daniel Lazarescu and Adrian Ghita stayed back in Galway, refusing to get on the bus taking the team to Dublin airport."

Fuicu said he did not know the reasons behind their decision but added they could be banned from playing in their country if Steaua complained to the FRR.

The pair are now missing in Ireland. The Irish justice ministry, Romanian embassy and police said they had no evidence of their applying for asylum.

Steaua lost 41-7 to Connacht last Saturday and will play their last match in the competition against French team Toulon next week.

Romanian international prop Gheorghe Cristian also failed to return home after a national team training tournament in France in 1997.
