World cup organisers face more controversy

World Cup officials were facing more controversy yesterday after a report in the British press highlighted major costs that were needlessly incurred during the tournament.

At a meeting of the general committee of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) that was convened last Thursday a financial review of the 1999 tournament was presented where the costs were brought to light.

In one glaring admission, the WRU was left with a bill for £200,000 for rooms that were left unoccupied at the Marriot Hotel in Cardiff. This, at a time when many rugby fans could not find accommodation in the city.

Also, another £33,000 pounds was wasted when a third of the 1,500 people invited for the post-final celebration dinner failed to take their seats.

These revelations have been seen as outrageous at a tournament where some sides struggled to provide a change strip. It has since prompted calls for a tighter control on future budgets and for the tournament to be fully accontable for such lavish spending.
