Randell confirmed as Highlanders captain
January 12, 2000

The Otago Highlanders Super 12 franchise has confirmed that last season's skipper Taine Randell will again take charge for the 2000 campaign.

The Highlanders reached last year's final in Dunedin, where they were defeated by the Canterbury Crusaders, but Randell came under fierce condemnation in New Zealand following the All Blacks' World Cup semi final implosion against France.

This is going to be an important Super 12 campaign for Randell - does he want to stay on as All Black skipper? Does new coach Wayne Smith want him as captain? But he will be encouraged by the vote of confidence from new Highlanders coach Peter Sloane, himself a member of John Hart's World Cup management team and the recipient of some vitriolic criticism.
