Lomu asked to end bid for loudest car stereo

New Zealand All Blacks rugby star Jonah Lomu has his ears set on a new world record and a politician Wednesday pleaded with him to give up the chase.

Lomu, not content with having the unofficial record for the country's loudest car stereo, is boosting his sound system to go for a world record.

His 100,000 NZ dollars (52,000 US)three and a half-tonne stereo has been pushed beyond 160 decibels louder than a jet engine at competitions.

Opposition politician Peter Brown reckons Lomu should give up his quest.

"While I do not wish to stifle his ambition, I would urge him to reassess his decision in the light of his public profile and to consider the possible implications of his actions," he said.

"He needs to lead by example. I would be particularly concerned if New Zealand teenagers followed suit."

Sensory disabilities, such as hearing loss, are the second most commonly reported disability in New Zealand, with 8.4 percent of all children and more than 16 percent of Pacific Island children failing hearing screening tests at age five, Brown said.

Lomu is of Pacific Island descent.
