All change in South Africa during off-season
January 12, 2000
The off-season in South Africa has seen a flurry of activity as players find new homes for the coming season. The Currie Cup champions, the Golden Lions, have chosen to take on Louis Koen form Western Province and Springbok international Kaya Malotana from border. Joining the squad at last year's beaten finalists, Natal, are Gaffie du Toit, Albert van den Berg, Andre Snyman and at The Bulls are Os du Randt, Naka Drotske, Jannie de Beer and Anton Leonard. AJ Venter may also be part of the Natal set-up at Kings Park before the season begins but at the moment that decision is in the balance.
South African Under-21 wing Frikkie Welsh, Natal centre Geoff Appleford and Eastern Province's Henry Pedro have all joined the Witbank union.
The smaller districts have suffered however from all this activity. One of these, South Western Districts, this year's Currie Cup semi-finalists, have not only lost coach Heyneke Meyer, but also ten regular players including Pieter O'Neill. |
