Wales U21s edge out England U21s in heated contest
Newbridge
January 20, 2000

Wales' U21 A team began their season with a well earned victory over their English counterparts.

The two great enemies did not take long to reacquaint themselves, and after barely ten minutes tempers flared and a brawl began in the English 22.

As the rough play continued referee Andrew Ireland saw fit to yellow card the Welshman Gary Powell and and England's Matt Holmes.

Unfortunately the ill-disciplined game saw little expansive rugby beyond the second phase but this did not seem dampen the enthusiastic 3,000 strong crowd.

A try for England from Marsden and a penalty by Leek gave them an early 8-0 lead but tries from Chiltern, Bowen and Chapman and nine points from Rees were enough to carry the Welsh side to victory.
