British to pay tribute to Templeton
London
January 20, 2000

British rugby plans a special tribute next month to former Australian coach Bob Templeton who died of a heart attack last month aged 67.

Templeton was one of Australia's most experienced and respected coaches and has been given much of the credit for Australian rugby's success in the 1980s and 1990s.

He always had good links with the English Rugby Football Union (RFU) who said on Thursday that a thanksgiving service would be held for the coach in London on February 22.

Templeton travelled to Wales to study the methods of famous Welsh coach Carwyn James and to New Zealand to learn from All Black coach Jack Gleeson before taking on the job of Wallaby coach in 1971.

Sacked in 1974, he regained the position in 1980, before losing out to Bob Dwyer in 1982 after 29 tests in charge.

Templeton was appointed as Dwyer's assistant coach from 1988-95, playing a prominent part in the Australian team that won the 1991 World Cup.
