Stormers captain Bobby Skinstad has been ruled out of at least the opening rounds and possibly all of the Super 12 after suffering further problems with the knee injury he sustained last year.

Stormers coach Alan Solomons was reported as saying that, "Bob is experiencing a lot of pain and it would appear that his quad has been weakened during the previous rehabilitation and the subsequent scope done on the knee after the World Cup,"

The Springboks' decision to select Skinstad, 23, for the World Cup after he was injured in a car accident last April met with some controversy but Solomons defended that decision saying he did not feel his player was rushed back too quickly. But medical experts have been quoted as saying he should never have played for the remainder of the year.

A second opinion was taken on Friday morning to look at the injury again in six weeks to decide whether to continue with physio or to undergo surgery. Solomons refused to comment on whether this latest setback was career threatening saying many players had recovered from more serious injuries.

If the rest does not heal the injury, the surgery would probably keep him out of the game for the entire year.

Skinstad, who lit up the rugby world in 1998 has failed to regain the same form since his accident.

He was quoted as saying, "I would rather ensure that I am ready when I do make my first appearance in the tournament so right now my focus is on doing the necessary rehabilitation to ensure that I have no further setbacks."

The Super 12 kicks off in Canberra on February 25.
