Six Nations chief won't rule out date change
January 27, 2000

Allan Hosie, chairman of the Six Nations Championship committee, has refused to rule out moving European rugby's biggest event to a late season start date.

Hosie, responding to calls to move the Six Nations to early spring, said any decision would be made in the best interests of the northern hemisphere game.

However, he confirmed any change would not be introduced until 2002 when existing television contracts with the BBC and BSkyB expire.

``No decisions can be made immediately because we are under existing contractual obligations,'' said Hosie.

``However, we must not forget this tournament is the envy of the rugby world. Any discussions will be held in conjunction with all unions and their coaches but we must not forget the importance of television.

``Our priority is always to help the advancement of northern hemisphere rugby on the world stage. If that means changing dates then we would not rule it out.''
