Grayson out of Six Nations squad

Paul Grayson has withdrawn from the England squad preparing for next Saturday's Six Nations Championship opener against Ireland at Twickenham.

The Northampton fly-half is out with an shoulder injury, and coach Clive Woodward has promoted Wasps playmaker Alex King from the England A squad.

British Lion Grayson, who last featured for his country in the World Cup quarter-final defeat against South Africa last October, has endured an injury-plagued season.

He has struggled for form and fitness over the past two months, and had a poor game when Northampton beat Saracens in the Tetley's Bitter Cup fifth round on Saturday.

Grayson, who would have challenged Jonny Wilkinson for the fly-half spot, now makes way for a player whose career has also suffered its fair share of injury mishaps.

King was considered unlucky to miss out on Woodward's Six Nations squad when it was announced last week, having produced a succession of quality displays for Wasps both domestically and in Europe.

The 25-year-old must now wait and see whether he will make the England 22 to face Ireland, a squad which Woodward is due to unveil tomorrow afternoon.
