Dwyer blasts heavyweight Quinnells
February 1, 2000

Welsh brothers Scott and Craig Quinnell have been labelled too fat in a stunning comment by Bristol coach Bob Dwyer that was reported in the British press.

The former Australia coach who took them to World Cup victory in 1991 was quoted as saying, "I think the Quinnells could be fantastically good players, but there aren't many great fat players on the international circuit. It's not meant to be insulting, it's meant to be a positive statement."

He went on to say, "They've come on leaps and bounds and I think they could be great. But I think it's difficult for them to string five top performances together.

"Craig is at least a season of hard work away from being at his best."

Wales coach Graham Henry defended his men by saying, "They are always working on their fitness - and Scott is playing as well as he's ever played. He's getting towards world class and it takes a lot for me to talk like that."

Lock Craig Quinnell will miss the opening Six Nations clash through injury.
