Ryan injury blow for Brumbies

The ACT Brumbies have lost new rugby league forward recruit Peter Ryan for a month to add to their injury woes for this month's Super 12 rugby series.

Ryan, who damaged an ankle when colliding with a teammate at training, joins eight other injured Brumbies.

But there was good news with World Cup hero Steve Larkham expected to recover from minor off-season knee surgery a week ahead of schedule, in time for the second trial match on February 12.

Ryan, a former Brisbane Broncos forward, will miss all three trial games, and possibly the opening Super 12 match against Auckland on February 25 here.

Ryan will have further tests on his injury Thursday in an effort to determine its full extent.

The Brumbies will also be without backup Wallaby flyhalf Rod Kafer for this weekend's opening trial against Waikato in New Zealand after suffering a knee strain.

Kafer and Ryan join Wallaby playmaker Steve Larkham (knee), outside backs Mitch Hardy, Graeme Bond (both shoulder), Damien McInally (quad strain) and backrow skipper Brett Robinson (shoulder) on the bench.

Keeping them company will be centres Jim Williams (ankle) and James Holbeck (calf strain). Coach Eddie Jones said the Brumbies received excellent news Wednesday about Larkham's recovery.

"We were anticipating he'd be back for the third trial, but now he'll likely be back for the second trial on 12 February (against Wellington) and that's really good news," he said.

"So we've got a few guys out but a few guys coming back, so it all balances out."
