ARU seek five Super 12 teams

Australian Rugby Union chief executive John O'Neill wants five Australian teams in an expanded Super 12 competition in the near future.

The ARU is pushing for a fourth Australian Super 12 team to play in next year's competition.

The ARU's application for a fourth team, likely to be based in Melbourne or Perth, will go before Super 12 governing body, SANZAR, early next month.

O'Neill said Australia wanted to cement its place as world champion by adding a fifth team down the track.

"For Australia to achieve its ambition of being a world superpower on a consistent basis we wouldn't want to stop at four," O'Neill said at the launch of NSW's Super 12 campaign here Thursday.

"Why couldn't there be teams in Brisbane, Sydney, the ACT (Canberra), Melbourne and Perth?

"It's got to be an ambition of ours. It shouldn't be just a matter of Melbourne and Perth. It should be, over time, both.

"We have aspirations of being a national game."
