Ai'i stars in Blues' win over Waratahs

The Auckland Blues scored their first victory in the Southern Cross tournament against the New South Wales Waratahs on Wednesday night.

The Blues came back from a 17 point deficit to win 37-27.The Waratahs opened the scoring in the 3rd minute when Matt Dowling intercepted a pass and ran 90 metres to score.A further try by Scott Staniforth and 2 penalties from Duncan McRae extended the lead to 20-3. Then in an extraordinary 12 minute spell the Blues scored 4 tries , inspired by young fly half Orene Ai'i , who scored 2 of the tries and a dropped goal.Wingers Joeli Vidiri and Doug Howlett also got in on the act, scoring a try apiece, before Iliesa Tanivula completed the scoring with the Blues' fifth try.Fly half Christian Warner scored a consolation for the Waratahs but the night belonged to the Blues, who will take encouragement from this after having been well beaten by the Queensland Reds on Saturday.
