February 18, 2000

Lock Jason Chandler has been dropped by the Auckland Blues and replaced by Leo Lafaiali'i.Chandler had been regarded as a surprise original pick after struggling throughout the NPC with a knee injury.Blues' coach Gordon Hunter said that Chandler's form and fitness were not up to expectations and that he will return to club rugby with Auckland side Ponsonby in the hope of receiving a recall in the event of later injuries.

Lafaiali'i , who is 25, was in the 1997 Super 12 winning side against the Brumbies when he was regarded as a player of enormous potential. He was a first choice again in 1998 but his only involvement in 1999 was a brief spell with the Chiefs. He has been playing in Italy since the start of the year on the understanding that he would be available for Super 12 action if required.
