February 29, 2000

Former All Black great Andy Haden, a veteran of 117 appearances for New Zealand, has had his application for the vacant All Blacks manager's job rejected by the NZRFU.

Haden was one of 116 applicants , only a handful are believed to have been shortlisted and the appointment is expected to be made at a board meeting on 13 March.

Haden, who is a high profile figure in New Zealand because of his managing of ex All Black skipper Sean Fitzpatrick and actress Rachel Hunter said, ' They did not want to hear what I wanted to say.I was serious about wanting the position.I wanted to signal that the NZRFU should go outside the Board in appointing someone and to signal that I thought I could make a difference.'

The favourite for the post remains Andy Leslie , himself an ex All Black skipper and father of Scottish international players John and Martin Leslie.
