Mather brought into Scotland squad

New Zealand-born forward Cameron Mather was brought into Scotland's squad on Tuesday as reserve cover for Saturday's Six Nations rugby union match against France at Murrayfield.

Stuart Reid will take over at number eight if Gordon Simpson fails to recover from a hip injury and Mather would be a replacement.

Simpson aggravated the injury in a match on Friday between Edinburgh Reivers and Glasgow Caledonians.

Reid is familiar with French rugby, having joined Narbonne at the beginning of this season.

He captained the A side to their championship win two seasons ago and played in Scotland's victory in Paris last year.

Mather, who has been training with the Scotland squad since Monday, would be a useful player for the Scotland bench, having played at lock and flanker.

Mather, a fine sevens player, was a member of Scotland's World Cup squad last year and fits the mould of the modern back five player.
